This exhibit, “Light in the World”, presents 38 images
captured by Guild members. Light is the essential
element of every photograph; in fact, “photograph” is
derived from the Greek, meaning to draw with light.
Light has many properties and qualities including
direction, color, and brightness. Light may be direct and
harsh, or diffuse and soft. When properly understood
and modulated, light is the key ingredient that expresses
the feeling the photographer had experienced and
wanted to convey through his/her image. Recognizing
and controlling the qualities of light in‐camera and in
post‐processing is key to convey depth, texture, and
mood. Understanding how the quality of light changes
throughout the day, in different weather conditions, and
under the many forms of artificial light, makes the
difference between a “snap shot” and a “great shot”.
