Photomanipulation - a presentation by Patricia Stockman, photographer and digital artist - July 23, 2014 - CMPG meeting

Patricia Stockman, photographer and digital artist – our speaker for the July 23d meeting of CMPG
Our speaker for the July 23, 2014 is Patricia Stockman, an artist residing in Frederick, MD. Miss Stockman been a photographer and digital artist for over 20 years after receiving a BFA from Salisbury State University and an Master of Arts Mount Saint Mary’s University.

My formal education as a traditional photographer has taken me through B&W film processing and printing, while my work experience has taken me through color film processing & printing, photojournalism, and studio portraiture work. Most recently, my teaching career has widened my view of subject matter and digital techniques in my own art.

My students and the challenges they face, as well as local imagery, and the digital technology at my disposal all influence my artwork. The versatility of layer use in Photoshop allows me to explore many different directions. The almost limitless possibilities of combining multiple images, changing blending modes, varying lighting effects and use of filters offered by Photoshop has led me to combine images into visual short stories. This layering ability complements the complexities and layering of life experiences and memories. When I am out shooting I see not just individual images, but how what’s in front of me can interact with the stores of images I’ve already collected.

I saw one of Miss Stockman's pieces in Maryland Federation of Art show in Annapolis, Maryland and was struck, not only by the depth of emotion and potential meaning in her pictures, but the superb quality of her technical execution. This allows the viewer to see right into her world as shown without the journey being interrupted by any technical inadequacies.

Ms Stockman will give us a great introduction into the world of photomanipulation and its potential for artists who are photographers.
